1b Antiquity and integrity of the psalms Sometimes this neglect has been due to misapprehension about the date and composition of the Psalms. Working from theories of how Israelite religion developed from a ‘many-gods’ to a ‘one-god’ outlook, some scholars have dated the Psalms very late in Old Testament history. They have explained the presence of obviously ancient passages as due to the method of the late authors who, supposedly, drew on pieces of old psalms and built them into their new compositions.
